A massive fire broke out near the Fraser River in Richmond, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, around 8:15 p.m. Richmond Fire-Rescue swiftly dispatched multiple trucks to the scene, where an old rail bridge had caught fire. Social media posts captured the dramatic plumes of smoke emanating from the vicinity of the River Rock Casino.
The Blaze Unfolds
The fire appears to have originated in an industrial building along the 8900-block of River Road. From there, it quickly spread to the decommissioned Marpole rail bridge, which now stands engulfed in flames. The bridge, coated in flammable and toxic creosote, connects Vancouver with Richmond and crosses the north arm of the Fraser River just west of Oak Street. Video footage shows the south end of the bridge completely ablaze, with pollution seeping into the water nearby.
Impact on Traffic and Infrastructure
As a result of the fire, the Oak Street Bridge was closed in both directions, causing traffic disruptions. Northbound traffic on Great Canadian Way experienced delays from River Road to Beckwith Road. Meanwhile, eastbound and westbound traffic on River Drive at Van Horne Way faced congestion. Travelers heading to the Vancouver International Airport were advised to seek alternative routes, avoiding the Oak Street Bridge.
Emergency Response
Richmond Fire-Rescue and local authorities worked tirelessly to contain the inferno. The River Rock Casino and Hotel, located adjacent to the fire, remained open while firefighters battled the blaze. Emergency services received numerous 9-1-1 calls, urging residents to stay informed through official channels and follow directions from local authorities.
