Saibari Closed Bayern’s 5-1 Opener From the Bench

Ismael Saibari came on in the 61st minute and laid on Bayern Munich’s last two goals in a 5-1 Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart. The champions had already retaken the lead by then, but the night’s final score belongs to a summer signing who started on the bench.

Vincent Kompany’s side beat Stuttgart 5-1 on opening night at the Allianz Arena on Friday, August 28, 2026, in front of Germany coach Jürgen Klopp. Joshua Kimmich had two assists of his own. Michael Olise won man of the match. The player who turned 3-1 into a rout still had to wait an hour.

Vagnoman Scored at Both Ends in Five Minutes

Stuttgart, fourth last season and beaten four times by these hosts in that campaign, including 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal final, did not arrive as extras. 2. 55th minute: Kimmich gathers a loose ball, drives at the box, and slips in Olise, who finishes calmly for 2-1.
3. Three minutes later: Alphonso Davies pulls a low cross through the rain, and Vagnoman, trying to clear on the slick grass, puts it past his own keeper for 3-1.

The league’s match facts gave that equalizer a 12 percent chance. It was also the lowest-probability goal of the night, which is a polite way of saying Stuttgart’s window was real and tiny. Once Vagnoman scored at both ends, the visitors were chasing a contest that had already flipped.

Saibari’s Two Assists on His Bundesliga Debut

Olise had a fourth ruled out for offside. Kompany then called for Saibari, who replaced Brown and needed about half an hour to finish the job. In the 82nd minute he carried the ball into the box, beat a challenge, and cut it back for Aleksandar Pavlović to sweep in. In the second minute of stoppage time, after Tom Bischof had won the ball in Stuttgart’s half, Saibari released Díaz, who rolled in the fifth.

He had a shooting chance on the first of those and gave it up. That choice is the cameo in miniature. Bayern’s own notes put him in a group of six players, with records kept since 2004-05, to record two assists on a Bundesliga debut, after teammate Luis Díaz last season plus Robbie Kruse, Shinji Ono, Toni Kroos, and Diego.

HOW THE 5-1 WAS BUILT

The Moroccan, 25, born in Terrassa, Spain, joined from PSV Eindhoven on a deal through June 30, 2031, and wears No. 34. Club pages credit him with 42 goals and 29 assists in 142 PSV games, three Dutch titles, and the 2025/26 Eredivisie player of the year award after 15 goals and eight assists in 27 league matches. He had already come off the bench in the 2-1 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup win at Borussia Dortmund on August 22.

Saibari, on joining, said that as a child you dream of signing for a club like Bayern, and that Kompany’s role in the talks mattered. In the week of the opener he told the club the season would be physical and intense, that they wanted to be champions again, and that he wanted to score goals and provide assists. He did the second part first.

Kimmich and Olise Still Controlled the First Hour

None of that makes the first hour a support act. Olise took 65 percent of the man-of-the-match vote after the goal, the free kick that hit the post, and the finish that VAR wiped off. The league’s fantasy ranking had him on 325 points, with Upamecano on 299 and Pavlović on 284. Kimmich’s first assist was a corner. His second was the drive and slip that restored the lead three minutes after the equalizer.

Davies, so often the outlet on the left, did not need a goal contribution on the sheet. The low ball that Vagnoman turned in was the Canadian’s night in one action, the kind of attacking full-back play Kompany can use if it holds. Harry Kane, who had 14 Bundesliga goals against Stuttgart coming in, more than against any other German side, did not add a 15th and came off in the 84th minute for Lennart Karl.

• The house: Transfermarkt logged a sellout crowd of 75,000, with Sören Storks refereeing a 4-2-3-1 against a 3-4-2-1.

The score ran past the first-half picture, which is why the xG still matters. Bayern created a 4-1-level night and put five on the board after Stuttgart had been in it for 52 minutes.

The No. 10 Job Is Already Crowded

Brown started again in the No. 10 role, the same attacking brief he had been given at the beginning of the campaign. He lasted until Saibari’s introduction. Pavlović, who scored the fourth, had already made his case in midfield before the substitute arrived. Bischof then won the ball that became the fifth. Jamal Musiala was not in this conversation on the night, and that is the point: even without him, Kompany had more creative bodies than starting places.

Sporting director Christoph Freund, when the transfer was announced, called Saibari versatile, intense, and brave, the sort of player fans come to the stadium to watch. That is easier to print than to schedule. Someone in that group sits on Friday nights from here, and the 5-1 will not make the choice cleaner.

Stuttgart Hit the Bar, Then the Wet Grass

Sebastian Hoeneß sent out a 3-4-2-1 with Prömel and Dženan Pejčinović making their Bundesliga debuts. Finn Jeltsch, the young centre-back, lasted into the last half-hour and picked up a yellow card in the 68th minute for tripping. Chabot was booked four minutes after the own goal. The shape held until Vagnoman’s five-minute double, and then it did not.

Bayern’s pre-match notes had already sketched the mismatch in last season’s numbers: 122 league goals for the champions, 71 for Stuttgart, a gap of 51, even though the visitors had the second-best attack in the division. Across 132 competitive meetings since the Bundesliga began, Bayern had 88 wins, 22 draws, and 22 losses against this opponent, the most victories one German professional club has taken off another in that span. On the grass, it still needed the slip.

Vagnoman will wear the clip. He also produced the volley that made the night briefly honest. Stuttgart were not overrun for an hour, and then they were, which is a harder scouting note for Hoeneß than a 5-1 that had been 1-0 at the pause.

Fifteen Years Without an Opening Loss

Bayern have not lost a league opener since 2011, when they went down 1-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach. This was a 15th straight season without an opening defeat, and it stretched a Matchday 1 run that, going into the game, stood at 19 wins and five draws across a quarter of a century. Last season they had begun with 6-0 against RB Leipzig and then never left first place, holding the top spot for 66 consecutive matchdays, a league record they now start over from a 3-point lead.

Neuer, 40, made his 600th competitive appearance for the club and began a 21st straight Bundesliga season, a consecutive run Bayern billed as a new mark. He could not keep the sheet clean after the Chabot-Vagnoman sequence, and he did not need to. Kompany is chasing a third title in a row after a domestic double. The 5-1 is the start those numbers predicted, with a first half that was narrower than the table will show.

Osnabrück Comes Next for the Crowded Attack

The first-round DFB-Pokal tie at VfL Osnabrück is set for 8:45 p.m. CEST on September 2 at the Bremer Brücke, with a league trip to Schalke three days later. Cup nights are where a 61st-minute problem becomes a starting-sheet problem. Saibari has now been involved in wins over Dortmund and Stuttgart in his first two competitive outings, both from the bench, both already in the books.

Kane still needs a first league goal of the season. Brown still has a claim at No. 10. Olise still looks like the side’s sharpest attacker. The new man has two assists and a line in the debut record book, and he has not yet been asked to do it from minute one. That is the surplus Kompany bought, and Osnabrück is the first place it has to be spent.
