Journalism, not advice
A bulletin reports what happened, on whose authority we are saying it, what changes because of it and what is still unknown. It is general information for a general reader. It is not financial or investment advice, not legal or tax advice, not medical advice, and not professional guidance of any other kind. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything, to sue or to settle, to take a drug or to stop taking one.
The distinction matters most on our business beat. A bulletin about a rate decision tells you what the committee did and by what vote. It does not tell you what to do about your mortgage, and if it ever reads as though it does, we have written it badly and would like to hear about it. Advice has to account for your circumstances, and we do not know your circumstances. Ask somebody who does and who is regulated to answer. Where we report a price, a yield, a forecast or a case outcome, we are reporting that figure at that moment and nothing more.
True when we published it
We verify before publishing and we say so in detail in our fact-checking policy. What we do not offer is a warranty. We do not warrant that a bulletin is complete, that the site will be available without interruption, that everything on it is free of error, or that it is suitable for a purpose you have in mind. Where a primary document is public we link it, and the document is the authority rather than our summary of it.
News also dates faster than most people expect. A casualty figure changes. A filing gets amended. A ruling is stayed on appeal. An injury update is wrong by kick-off. Our answer is to date every bulletin and to add a note when the story moves, as our corrections policy describes, rather than editing yesterday into being right. That means an old bulletin is an accurate record of what was known at that time and not a claim about today, so check the date before you rely on one.
News, analysis, opinion and anything paid for
The default here is news written straight, with our judgement kept out of it. Where a piece has to say what something means rather than what happened, it is labelled analysis and the reasoning stays visible, which makes it one editor’s reading of the evidence rather than a finding of ours. The little opinion we publish is labelled and signed, and it represents the person who wrote it. Our editorial standards set out how those calls are made.
Advertising is somebody else’s material sitting on our page. Sponsored items carry the word Sponsored above the headline, name the advertiser as the source, and are never written or edited by the people editing the news. We review creatives, and reviewing one is not the same as verifying a claim inside it, so a statement made in an advertisement is the advertiser’s statement and not ours. We take no affiliate income today. If that ever changes, the links will be labelled where they appear, and no product will be recommended in a bulletin because a link pays.
Other people’s words, pictures and material
Quotations, photographs, documents, video and embedded posts appear here under licence, with permission, or as fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of reporting and criticism, and always with attribution. Rights in that material stay with whoever owns them. If you think something of yours has been used without permission, our DMCA and copyright page explains how to tell us and how fast we act.
External links are there for reference and to show you our source. They are not endorsements of the site at the other end, or of anything else it publishes. We cannot control those pages, they change after we have linked them, and once you follow a link you are on somebody else’s site under their terms and their privacy policy. Errors, omissions and the limit of what we carry
Mistakes here get fixed on the story with a note saying what was wrong, and never by a quiet edit. If you have spotted one, quote the sentence and tell us where the right information can be checked. Omissions are a slightly different argument. A bulletin is short on purpose, so something you would have included was often left out as a judgement rather than an oversight, and you are welcome to tell us the judgement was wrong.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from anything done or not done in reliance on what we publish, including trades, purchases, legal steps and health decisions. Nothing on this page excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing removes a consumer right your local law does not let you waive.
