Google’s Free AI Pro Year Is Three Different Deals

Eligible US college students can claim 12 months of Google AI Pro at $0, a $239.88 value, through December 31, 2026. Hardware and family tips get sold as the same free year, and they are not.

Google AI Pro still lists at $19.99 a month in the United States. The student path, the laptop path, and the Pixel 11 Pro path hand out different lengths of that plan, and family sharing hands out a thinner set of perks. Google’s terms also stop you from stacking them.

How the $239.88 Year Breaks Apart

The number everyone quotes is 12 times $19.99. That full Pro year exists for qualifying US students and for Chromebook Plus buyers. A regular Chromebook gets three months. Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold get six. Students outside the United States get Google AI Plus, not Pro.

HOW THE FREE YEAR ACTUALLY BREAKS DOWN

Google values the 12-month Pro perk at $239.88, the six-month Pixel perk at $119.94, and the three-month Chromebook perk at $59.97. Plus then bills $4.99 a month, or the local price, if you do not cancel.

Only US Students Get the Full Pro Year

On August 19, 2026, Jennifer Shen, director of product management for the Gemini app, put the split in writing. For qualifying college students in the United States, Google is offering one year of Google AI Pro for free, listed at $19.99 a month. That US plan includes 4x Gemini usage against non-AI accounts, Gemini Spark, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage, and Google Health Premium.

In more than 140 other markets, the free year is Google AI Plus. That tier includes Gemini Omni, 2x usage limits, and 400 GB of storage. After the year, Plus charges $4.99 a month or the local equivalent unless you cancel. Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, and Tunisia sit outside that Plus list, so students there do not get this back-to-school year at all.

Google’s own Gemini account posted the same split on August 19: US students get Pro, and 140-plus countries get Plus.

Students who want ad-free music and video can take a separate bundle of Google AI Pro plus a YouTube Premium individual plan for up to 70% off, in more than 80 countries including the United States. A footnote on that bundle says it can run up to 4 years with fresh student checks, then may roll to the standard monthly price once student status ends. That longer window is not the same thing as the 12-month free Pro year.

WHO CAN CLAIM THE US STUDENT YEAR

• Age floor: You must be 18 years of age or older, on a personal Google account, with SheerID confirming you are enrolled at a qualifying college.
• A card on file: A Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method is required at sign-up, even though Google does not charge during the 12 months.
• Hard stop date: The offer must be redeemed by December 31, 2026, and it is not available on a school-issued Workspace for Education account.
• Blocked accounts: You are out if you are already in a family group, on a discounted Pixel bundle, paying through a partner such as Google Fi, or using a supervised Google account.

Claim it at one.google.com/ai-student. On the day the 12 months end, Google charges the card the standard monthly price for that country’s plan until you cancel. If you cancel during the free period, access can run to the end of those 12 months. If you have packed more than the free 15 GB into Drive, Gmail, and Photos, canceling means deleting files or paying again before you can store anything new.

The $0 headline has already pulled people toward fake campus emails. In the last days of August, viral posts walked readers through applying at an online university before a September 1 application-fee waiver ended, then enrolling in a class so a student address would mint. Community Notes on those posts pointed out that tuition there starts at $250 a credit and that Google’s offer still needs SheerID to confirm active enrollment. Enrolled students have started asking strangers to stop treating campus status as a coupon printer.

Pixel 11 Pro Cuts the Trial in Half

Buy a current Pro phone and you do not get the student year. Google Store terms in the United States attach six months of Google AI Pro, a $119.94 value, to Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The offer is good through October 31, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. PT. A card is required at sign-up, with no charge until those six months end.

Google’s Australian Pixel 11 launch post uses the same device list. The base Pixel 11 is not named in those AI Pro terms. Last year’s Pixel 10 Pro family still shows a 6-month or 12-month AI Pro trial on Google One offers for Pixel devices, which is why leftover Pro 10 stock can look richer on paper than a new Pro 11.

You redeem from the Gemini app or the Google One app on the phone. New and existing Google One users can take the Pixel 11 Pro offer, with the usual cuts for add-ons, higher-tier plans, family members who are not the plan manager, and third-party billing. Return the phone and the trial can vanish with it.

Six months also means the bill lands before the next yearly Pixel cycle. Prior Pro phones trained buyers to expect a full year of the paid Gemini plan in the box. This generation kept 5 TB, Health Premium, and higher Gemini limits, then halved the clock.

Twelve Months Still Come With Chromebook Plus

The laptop aisle is the hardware path that still matches the student year. Google’s Chromebook perks page offers a complimentary 12 months of Google AI Pro with Chromebook Plus, valued at $239.88, including higher Gemini access (Nano Banana, Veo, and Gemini in Gmail and Docs) plus 5 TB of storage. A standard Chromebook gets three months, valued at $59.97. Both must be redeemed by January 31, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Gemini in that Pro plan, and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, is limited to ages 18 and up. The three-month perk does not apply to schools and businesses, including devices bought outside commercial channels. A card is required; Google starts billing $19.99 a month when the trial ends if you leave it on.

Google’s Chromebook Plus shop lists the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 from $429.99, which is the cheap way to buy the 12-month Pro perk with a new machine. That is a $429.99 laptop to obtain a $239.88 plan, not a free year on a phone you already own. Canada is on the Chromebook Plus country list even though Canadian students are excluded from the back-to-school Plus year, so the laptop is the campus-adjacent door that remains open there.

Family Members Do Not Get YouTube Lite

If someone in your Google family group already pays for AI Pro, up to five other people can use select AI features and the shared 5 TB pool at no extra cost. Files stay private to each account. That is the genuine household math, and it is also where the sales pitch sheds parts.

WHAT A FAMILY MEMBER ACTUALLY GETS

• Shared storage: The 5 TB pool across Drive, Gmail, and Photos is the piece that travels with the group.
• Shared AI quota: Family members can use Pro AI features, but daily usage limits and Flow credits come from one shared plan, not five extra meters.
• YouTube stays with the host: Google’s help page says the YouTube Premium Lite is non-shareable, so only the plan manager watches most videos without ads.
• Trials wait on a paid conversion: Lite is for paid Pro members. If you are still in a trial, Google adds Lite after the trial finishes and converts to a paid plan.

Bundle savings are not shareable inside a family group. Health and Home extras that ride with Pro also sit with the plan manager on Google’s family-sharing notes. Tagging along is real for storage and a slice of Gemini. It is not a second full $19.99 plan cloned five times.

Google’s Terms Block Combining the Three Paths

The student terms read like a trap for anyone who tries to collect every promo. You do not qualify if you are part of a family group. You do not qualify if you are a discounted Pixel bundle subscriber. You do not qualify with a third-party or Google Fi Google One plan, or with a supervised account. The offer is individual use only, and it is not available on a school-issued account.

That is why “three ways” is the wrong mental model. Join a parent’s Pro family group and the student year is closed. Take the Pixel 11 Pro six-month bundle and the student year is closed. The family host already paying $19.99 is the person who can share storage; the student who wants 12 months of Pro has to stay off that group and put a personal card on file.

Usage limits during the student offer “may” differ from a paid Pro member, and Google says those limits can change without notice, including for capacity. The free year is the Pro SKU with a promotional price of $0, not a promise that every paid-plan meter is identical for 12 months.

What Happens After the Free Months End?

Every path above is a trial with a cancel date, not a gift card. Leave the plan on, and the same payment method that proved you were a real customer is charged the going monthly rate. WHEN EACH OFFER STOPS TAKING NEW CLAIMS

1. August 19, 2026: Google opens the back-to-school student year, with US Pro and Plus in 140-plus other markets.
2. December 31, 2026: Last day to redeem the student offer.
3. January 31, 2027: Last day to redeem the Chromebook Plus 12-month perk and the standard Chromebook 3-month perk, at 11:59 p.m. PT.
4. October 31, 2027: Last day to redeem the six-month AI Pro perk on Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold, at 11:59 p.m. PT.

The storage clause is the quiet lever after those dates. Fill a meaningful slice of 5 TB during a Pro trial, then cancel, and you are over the free 15 GB the moment the paid plan ends. Mail, photos, and Drive stay readable, but new files wait until you delete your way back under the cap or start paying again. That is how a $0 year becomes a $19.99 habit without a new sales pitch.
