Google’s Free AI Pro Year Still Needs a Card

Eligible U.S. college students can still get 12 months of Google AI Pro at $0, a plan that otherwise costs $19.99 a month. Google relaunched that offer on August 19, 2026, and the claim window runs through December 31.

The rest of the “free year” story is thinner. Students outside the United States get the cheaper Plus plan, a new Pixel 11 Pro trial lasts six months, and every path asks for a card before anything unlocks.

A U.S. Student Plan and a Cheaper World Tier

Jennifer Shen, director of product management for the Gemini app, wrote that Google is offering one year of Google AI Pro for free to eligible U.S. college students, valued at $19.99 a month. That tier includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits than a non-AI account, Gemini Spark, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage, and Google Health Premium.

Students in more than 140 other markets get a free year of Google AI Plus instead. Plus includes Gemini Omni, 2x usage limits, and 400 GB of storage. After the year, Google says Plus auto-charges $4.99 a month, or the local equivalent, unless it is cancelled.

The company’s own announcement drew that line in public, and it is the part of the offer people clock first: the $19.99 product is the U.S. campus giveaway, and almost everyone else is on the $4.99 product.

Google’s Plus footnote names those six markets as exceptions. Canada sits in that list, so a Canadian student does not get the U.S. Pro year and is also outside this Plus giveaway. Both student windows close on December 31, 2026.

The free study tools are wider than the paid plans. Shen said a new student hub, study notebooks, interactive visuals, and Deep Research inside Gemini Live are rolling out to Gemini app users, not only to people who redeem Pro. A study notebook can take lecture notes, run a diagnostic quiz, and build short lessons around the gaps. Google’s own example prompt is “show me how DNA works in 3D.”

There is a paid side door for people who want Pro plus YouTube. Google is offering a bundle of Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium at up to 70% off, valid for up to four years if student status still checks out. SheerID verifies that bundle, and it is not available on school-issued accounts.

How Google Locks In the Student Offer

You verify enrollment, attach a Google Payments method, and start a 12-month trial that becomes a paid Google AI plan unless you cancel before the end date. The U.S. Pro path bills $19.99 a month after that; the international Plus path bills $4.99 a month or the local price. Google’s student terms, last updated August 19, 2026, set the floor at 18 years of age or older, which is stricter than several how-to posts that still say 16.

Unless cancelled earlier, Google AI Pro will automatically charge $19.99/month after the trial ends. Cancel anytime.

The same footnote says a valid form of payment is required at sign-up. How-to posts still circulate that say a school login is enough and that no card is needed. Google’s terms still ask for a Google Payments account with a qualifying payment method, and the Plus footnote repeats the same billing rule at $4.99.

THE STUDENT OFFER RULES

• The age line: You must be 18 or older under the current student terms.
• The account: The plan attaches to a personal Google Account, not a school-issued inbox.
• The check: SheerID verifies that you are enrolled at a higher-education school in a supported country.
• The card: A Google Payments method has to sit on the account at sign-up.
• The blocks: Family-group members, discounted Pixel bundle subscribers, Google Fi or other third-party One plans, enterprise buyers, and supervised accounts do not qualify.

That family-group block is easy to miss. If you already sit in someone else’s Google family, the student year is closed to that account. Google One community guidance also says the student plan cannot be shared into a family group after you redeem it, and that a school email used for SheerID is linked to one personal Gmail and is not transferable.

Students start on Google’s own page to claim the 12-month student plan. Google’s footnotes tell U.S. redeemers to cancel before the year ends if they do not want the $19.99 monthly charge. A free year claimed in August 2026 starts billing in August 2027, which is a long gap to remember without a reminder of your own.

12 Months Come With Chromebook Plus

The hardware path is the one that still matches the “full year of Pro” headline for people who are not U.S. students. Google’s Chromebook perks page offers a complimentary 12 months of Google AI Pro with Chromebook Plus, and it prices that perk at $239.88 based on the monthly auto-renew rate. A standard Chromebook gets three months, priced at $59.97.

Both Chromebook perks must be redeemed by January 31, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. Google says you can cancel anytime. Gemini in Google AI Pro, and Gemini in Gmail and Docs, are limited to ages 18 and older on that page, and Gemini in those apps is listed for select languages only.

ZDNET flagged the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 at $420 as the cheapest Plus machine in that write-up, which is the arithmetic people run: a $239.88 software year folded into a laptop you were already buying. The perk page also names Nano Banana, Veo, and 5 TB of storage as part of the Plus-laptop year. School and business purchases are carved out of the three-month standard Chromebook offer, including devices bought outside commercial channels.

Existing Google One users can use these device perks in the copy Google has been running, with a limit that matters: trial time does not stack. Pixel offer terms say that if you redeem a new trial while one is already running, the old trial or plan is revoked and the new one starts, even if months were left.

Pixel 11 Pro Now Carries a 6-Month Trial

Pixel used to be the easy 12-month Pro card. That is no longer the deal on the current flagship Pro phones. Google’s Pixel help lists a 6-month Google AI Pro trial for Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, with 5 TB of storage and Google Health Premium, and that offer expires on October 31, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

Forbes reported that Google cut the Pixel 11 Pro trial from a full year to six months, a $119.94 value at $19.99 a month, and that the base Pixel 11 no longer includes an AI Pro trial at all. 9to5Google published the same base-model drop. Google’s own Pixel 11 Pro terms, dated August 11, 2026, describe six months at no charge, one redemption, and a Google Payments method at sign-up.

New and existing users are eligible for the Pixel 11 Pro AI Pro offer, Google’s help page says, and trials auto-renew into paid One plans unless they are cancelled. Android Central found that the six-month trial no longer pops during first-time setup the way older Pixels did. The path it described is Gemini app, menu, settings, then Start trial, and a screen that should read that the Pixel 11 gets six months for $0 before a Play Store payment method is attached.

9to5Google also listed people who cannot redeem a Pixel trial: anyone on a Google One plan above 5 TB, anyone with an active One add-on, a family member who is not the manager, or anyone paying through a third-party affiliate. That is the same kind of gate as the student terms, which already block discounted Pixel bundle subscribers from stacking the campus year on top.

Family Seats Skip YouTube Premium Lite

A Google One membership can be shared with up to five other people, so six people in total sit on one bill. Google’s own plan copy says family members on a Google AI Pro plan can use AI benefits and features at no extra cost, and that files stay private even when storage is shared. That is the workaround people use when they are not students and are not buying a laptop.

It is not the same product the manager paid for. Google Help is blunt about YouTube Premium Lite, the ad-light YouTube plan bundled with paid AI Pro: it is an individual plan, it cannot be shared with family members, and only the plan manager watches without ads. Family members can still see ads. Google Store credit from eligible purchases is also manager-only in listed countries, including the United States.

WHAT A FAMILY SEAT INCLUDES

• Shared pool: Up to five other people can use the 5 TB storage and listed AI features at no extra cost.
• Manager only: YouTube Premium Lite, Google Store credit, and the right to change or cancel the plan stay with the manager.
• Student conflict: The student free year is blocked if you already sit in a family group, and that student plan is not built to be shared afterward.
• Trial gap: Google Help says YouTube Premium Lite is added after a trial finishes and converts to a paid plan, so a free year can run without that YouTube perk.

That last point cuts against how-to lists that treat YouTube Premium Lite as part of every free Pro year. Google’s Lite help page says eligible paid AI Pro members get it, names family-group plan managers, and says trial members get Lite after the trial converts. If you redeem Pro for $0 and never convert, Lite is not the thing you should count on.

ChatGPT Plus Offers Students Four Months

OpenAI’s 2026 Back to School offer is the clean comparison, and it is shorter. The company’s help page says eligible U.S. college and graduate students get four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including ChatGPT Work and other Plus features. SheerID checks enrollment. A valid payment method is required. After those four months, the plan renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.

That OpenAI window closes earlier, on October 31, 2026. It is U.S. institutions only. Store-billed Plus plans through Apple or Google Play cannot take the offer until they are billed by ChatGPT directly. If you cancel during the four free months, remaining promo months are forfeited when the cancel takes effect.

Google is giving U.S. students three times as many free months, at a list price that matches Plus to the penny, and it is giving Plus-tier Gemini to a much wider set of countries. OpenAI is not matching the 5 TB storage dump or the Gmail and Docs embed. Students who already live in Drive, Gmail, and Docs get a Google year that is hard to copy with a chatbot login alone.

The two funnels still rhyme. Both demand SheerID. Both demand a card. Both say the promo rolls into the full monthly price unless you cancel. Google’s version simply lasts longer and, in the United States, dumps a 5 TB Drive ceiling into the same bag as Gemini Spark.

Storage Is What Makes Canceling Hard

Google AI Pro is sold as an AI plan, and the number that changes behavior after month 12 is the storage. A U.S. student or Chromebook Plus buyer who fills 5 TB of Drive, Gmail, and Photos during a free year is not going back to 15 GB without deleting. Pixel help is explicit about what happens when a storage plan ends: limits reset, old files stay readable, and new uploads, Photos backups, and even Gmail send and receive can stall once you are over the cap.

That is why the family seat still has a use even when YouTube Lite does not travel. One person paying $19.99 can keep five other people inside a 5 TB pool. The student offer refuses that structure on purpose. Google wants the campus year on a personal Gmail it can bill in 2027, not on a family manager who already pays.

ZDNET’s three-path write-up still works as a map if you correct the fine print. U.S. students get the $19.99 product for a year. Chromebook Plus still bundles 12 months. A Pixel 11 Pro now bundles six. A family seat is AI plus storage, not the manager’s YouTube plan, and it cannot be combined with the student year. Plus, not Pro, is what Google is giving students in most of the 140-plus markets.

Google’s footnotes say you can cancel anytime, and that the $19.99 monthly charge begins unless you do it before the year is up.
