Prime Video Locks Reacher Season 6 Before Season 5 Wraps
Prime Video ordered Reacher Season 6 while Season 5 films in Toronto, after 66 million Season 4 viewers and no book pick yet.
Prime Video renewed Reacher for a sixth season on September 28, 12 days after the Season 4 finale, while Season 5 was still filming in Toronto. Season 4 drew 66 million viewers worldwide in its first 28 days and lifted the series past 200 million lifetime viewers since 2022.
That is the public math. The working math is a calendar. Season 5 was already written and in production before Season 4 premiered. A spinoff landed the same night as the finale. Season 6 now sits on the next gap, with no novel named.
Prime Video Ordered Season 6 While Season 5 Was Still Shooting
Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios put the order out of Culver City on September 28. It is the first time Reacher has taken two renewals in the same year. Season 5 was greenlit in May, at the streamer’s upfronts, months before anyone could watch Season 4.
Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, treated the pickup as a lock on the star as much as on the title.
Reacher hits hard. What Lee Child has built and Nick Santora and his creative teams have brought to life is, simply, incredible. Alan Ritchson is Jack Reacher. He’s delivered a performance that has captivated audiences around the world. Together with our partners at Paramount Television Studios, we couldn’t be more excited to continue this journey.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios, September 28 announcement
Nick Santora remains showrunner. Ritchson is also an executive producer, alongside Child, Don Granger, Scott Sullivan, Mick Betancourt, Lisa Kussner, Sam Hill, Amy Pocha, and Seth Cohen. Carolyn Harris and Kenny Madrid oversee the series for Paramount Television Studios.
The studios said Season 4 reached 66 million viewers globally in 28 days, beating Season 3, and that it ranks among the five most-viewed seasons of any Prime Video original. All returning Reacher seasons now hold the top three spots among returning seasons on the service, in the order Season 2, Season 4, then Season 3.
Two Seasons and a Spinoff on the Same Calendar
Streamers rarely order a season before the previous one has finished shooting. Prime Video did it anyway, with Season 5 still on a Toronto stage and with no trailer, no air date, and no public footage from that shoot. Season 6 is a press release and a hold on the people who have to come back.
The overlap did not start with this pickup. Principal photography on Season 5 began on July 20, 2026, under Santora, before Season 4 launched on August 12. Ritchson had already said the back half of his year would be Season 5, with every script finished before cameras rolled.
Then the finale and the first spinoff were stacked on the same Wednesday. Season 4’s last episode landed on September 16. That night Prime Video also dropped all eight episodes of Neagley, the Maria Sten series Santora created with Nicholas Wootton, in more than 240 countries. Ritchson guest-stars as Jack Reacher. Sten, who played Frances Neagley in the mothership, now leads as a Chicago private investigator going after a friend’s suspicious death.
THE OVERLAP THAT LOCKED SEASON 6
- February 4, 2022: Season 1 premieres, adapting Killing Floor.
- May 2026: Prime Video renews the series for Season 5 at its upfronts, before Season 4 airs.
- July 20, 2026: Principal photography on Season 5 begins in Toronto.
- August 12, 2026: Season 4 premieres with three episodes, then weekly releases.
- September 16, 2026: Season 4 ends and Neagley dumps all eight episodes the same night.
- September 28, 2026: Season 6 is ordered, with Season 5 still filming and no source novel named.
Neagley opened to a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes (31 reviews) and a 67 on Metacritic. For a few days it even knocked the flagship off Prime Video’s own chart. The factory now runs a lead series, a second series from the same room, and a third season of the lead that nobody outside the company has seen.
Season 4’s 66 Million Viewers Land in Prime’s Top Five
Amazon’s 66 million figure is a global unique-viewer count for Season 4’s first 28 days, not a Nielsen minutes tally. The U.S. minutes still explain why the order came this fast. Nielsen logged 1.18 billion minutes for the week of September 7-13, the fifth straight week above 1 billion, with Reacher at No. 1 in four of those five weeks.
Season 2 remains the high-water mark among returning seasons. Season 4 still cleared Season 3 and joined Season 2 in Prime Video’s all-time top five original seasons, a short list that also includes the first seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout. Critics stayed with it: Season 4 sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 77 on Metacritic.
HOW PRIME VIDEO RANKS REACHER
| Run | Amazon figure | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Season 4, first 28 days | 66 million viewers | Top 5 original seasons; ahead of Season 3 |
| Returning seasons | Seasons 2, 4, then 3 | Top 3 returning seasons on Prime Video |
| Lifetime since 2022 | More than 200 million viewers | 58% of the audience outside the United States |
| U.S. week of Sept. 7-13 | 1.18 billion Nielsen minutes | Fifth straight week above 1 billion |
Each season is eight episodes. Through Season 4 that is 32 hours of a show that still opens with three episodes at once and then goes weekly. The 200 million lifetime count is the number the studios used to justify extending the line into a year that already had a season in the can and another in front of cameras.
Why the Show Keeps Skipping Lee Child’s Order
The renewal does not say which novel Season 6 will use. That blank is not a teaser. It is how this adaptation has always worked. Santora picks the book that will play, not the next spine on the shelf. Child has said there was no reason to do them in order, because Killing Floor introduced Reacher as a person and later books could be chosen for what they showed next.
Season 5 is the one title that is locked. Season 5 will be based on Make Me, the 20th novel, from 2015. After a train stop in the town of Mother’s Rest, Reacher teams with private investigator Michelle Chang on a missing-person case that opens into a criminal conspiracy. Amanda Ip plays Chang, with Jay Baruchel as Chief Buck Bauer, Kevin Durand as Nokes, and Ciara Bravo as Eunice. Baruchel had been set for Season 4, left for a personal matter, and came back in a new part.
THE BOOKS ON SCREEN SO FAR
- Season 1: Killing Floor (1997), book one, the only time the show matched publication order, released February 4, 2022.
- Season 2: Bad Luck and Trouble (2007), book 11, December 15, 2023 through January 19, 2024.
- Season 3: Persuader (2003), book seven, February 20 through March 27, 2025.
- Season 4: Gone Tomorrow (2009), book 13, August 12 through September 16, 2026.
- Season 5: Make Me (2015), book 20, filming in Toronto since July 20, 2026, no premiere date.
- Season 6: No novel attached as of the September 28 order.
The hole in that list has a name. Die Trying, Child’s 1998 second novel, is Ritchson’s favorite. A fan on Threads lamented that the show keeps skipping the book in which Reacher fights through a white supremacist militia camp. Ritchson replied that it was his favorite, then added, “Fun fact: I had it approved until someone got re-elected.” He did not name a season or a person. Prime Video has not commented. Season 5 is Make Me anyway.
Child has also said some novels will probably never be adapted because of setting or tone, including 61 Hours, a title fans still ask for. The catalog is long enough for a 10-season run. It is not an open menu. Politics, tone, and what will actually shoot in Ontario all cut books before a Season 6 title is even in the release.
Ritchson’s 10-Season Wish Meets a Full Calendar
The second-order cost of this pickup sits on one body. On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, recorded while Season 5 was gearing up, Ritchson was asked how long he could play the part. He said the audience would decide, then gave the number in his head.
I’d love to get to 10. It just seems like a really cool number and it would honor everybody, the audience that supported it, Amazon and the work that they did to make this thing what it is, and Lee and his work and all that.
Alan Ritchson, on Happy Sad Confused
Ten seasons would take the show deep into the 2030s if the current pace holds. The current pace is the problem as much as the prize. Season 4 filmed from June 16 to November 18, 2025, including work in Philadelphia. Season 5 started July 20, 2026. Ritchson has already called that second half of the year a Reacher block. Season 6 now claims the block after that.
He paid for the first season in the usual way this job collects. During the Ontario shoot he broke a bone in his shoulder and needed surgery, and he tore an abdominal muscle in a fight scene. The character is a drifter who leaves when the job is done. The actor is booked through a season that has not aired, on a series that just ordered the one after that.
That is why the September 28 notice reads less like a victory lap and more like a hold. If Ritchson is Jack Reacher, as Friedlander said, then locking Season 6 before Season 5 wraps is how you keep him in the part before the calendar fills with other films. Motor City and the rest of his slate do not pause because Prime Video is happy.
58 Percent of the Audience Lives Outside the United States
The studios put a quieter figure next to the 200 million. 58 percent of Reacher’s audience is international, with extra weight in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Brazil. That is not a vanity split. It is the reason an American drifter show can be ordered early in a year when U.S. streaming minutes are under pressure elsewhere.
Season 4 still won the domestic minutes race in four of five tracked weeks. The international share is what makes the lifetime 200 million possible on a service that reports global unique viewers, not just Nielsen’s U.S. box. A show this physical is cheap to market in any language: a very large man walks into a town, a crime is already in progress, and the plot is a fist and a file.
Neagley tests whether that machine still runs if Ritchson is only a guest. Early chart movement says the title can lead a week without him in every frame. That is useful to Amazon MGM Studios, and it is also a warning written into the same week as the Season 6 order. The mothership is still the thing they renewed. The spinoff is the thing they can keep running if the lead’s body or schedule ever gives out.
Season 6 Has a Green Light and No Novel Attached
No start date, no premiere window, and no book. Season 5 has no air date either. A late 2027 bow is the working guess only because Season 4 wrapped in November 2025 and showed up in August 2026. Santora’s room would need a title before that Toronto company can turn around again.
The September 28 release names the partners and the star. It does not name Gone Tomorrow’s successor after Make Me. Until that pick lands, Season 6 is a slot on a production board, not a story. Die Trying is the title Ritchson wanted. Make Me is the title already shooting. The next one will be whichever novel still fits a series that now has to land every year, in more than 240 countries, with the same man in the jacket.
Prime Video ordered the season because the viewers showed up. The viewers showed up because the show still does the simple thing well. The simple thing now requires Ritchson, Santora, and a Child novel that has not been chosen, stacked on top of a season that has not finished shooting. That is the job Season 6 actually ordered.
